The one-year Echocardiology Fellowship at Mayo Clinic Arizona aims to find the very strongest cardiology fellows and transform them into the tomorrow's leaders in academic and clinical echocardiography. We believe our program provides superb training in all aspects of echocardiology in a supportive, collegial and stimulating environment.

Specifically, our program provides the opportunity for fellows to develop proficiency in performing and interpreting echocardiographic studies. The program focuses on helping fellows gain an in-depth understanding of echocardiographic and Doppler methods of assessing cardiovascular diseases and disorders.

Your training program can be customized to meet your individual career goals. You will work closely with a highly experienced and knowledgeable clinical and research faculty.

Qualifications
To be eligible, applicants must have successfully completed three years of cardiovascular training.

Positions
One position is available annually on a competitive basis.

Applicants considered for an appointment will be invited to visit Mayo Clinic for a personal interview with the program director and selected faculty.

Interviews are conducted between May and June each year.

 

Curriculum

The fellow is responsible for performing and interpreting echocardiographic studies with the responsible consultant. Regular teaching sessions will be given by staff echocardiography consultants.

A typical schedule in the Echocardiography Fellowship Program includes the following:

  • Two to three days per week, the fellow is training in procedures in the Echocardiography Laboratory. The fellow is expected to perform an echocardiographic examination on each patient coming to the Echocardiography Laboratory. The fellow is expected to interpret the results of the procedure and enter these results into a computer format.
  • Two to three days per week, the fellow is expected to pursue clinical research in the area of echocardiography.

Didactic Training

Clinical conferences, seminars, small discussion groups, journal clubs and one-on-one instruction are integral parts of this fellowship.

Evaluation

To ensure that you acquire adequate knowledge and develop your technical skills, your performance will be monitored carefully during the course of your program training. You will be evaluated formally by your supervising faculty member and will meet with the program director to review these evaluations. In addition, you will regularly evaluate the faculty to ensure that your educational needs are being met.
