The Onco Nephrology Fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center is a one-year position available for individuals who are board eligible in nephrology.
Onco nephrology fellows will gain experience in the recognition and management of:
- Nephrotoxicity from traditional and newer targeted therapies, including CAR T cells
- Myeloma related kidney disease
- Patients with genitourinary malignancies
- Fluid and electrolyte disturbances from cancer and cancer treatments
During training, fellows will deepen their understanding about the appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to the cancer patient with kidney disease. The fellow will devote six months to clinical rotations and six months to a research project. During the clinical time, the fellow will rotate in two week blocks on the Bone Marrow Transplant and Multiple Myeloma inpatient services. Additional two-week blocks will be spent in the outpatient clinic supervised by an attending medical oncologist and surgeon specializing in kidney cancer. The fellow will have opportunities to attend multidisciplinary conferences and to participate in interdisciplinary research. At the end of the program, the fellow is expected to complete an abstract or manuscript.
Nephrology Clinical Rotation for Renal Fellows
Weill Cornell Medicine Renal Fellowship
All first-years fellows who have been accepted as Renal Fellows at Weill Cornell Medicine spend three months on the Nephrology Service at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. One second-year fellow is selected for a four-month research project related to cancer and the kidney. At the end of the program, the research fellow is expected to complete an abstract or manuscript. Applicants interested in this program are referred to the Weill Cornell Medicine Renal Fellowship Program website. Many of our past fellows have pursued careers academia, research and clinical medicine and a number of our trainees are current members of the Weill Cornell Medicine faculty.
The Nephrology Service also offers the opportunity for Renal Fellows from other institutions to spend 2-4 weeks with the Onco Nephrology inpatient and outpatient services at Memorial Sloan Kettering. These fellows are granted a unique opportunity to explore the emerging subspecialty of Onco Nephrology as outlined in the section above.
